Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why should I give to the United Way? When you give to the United Way, the impact of your gift is multiplied as it works together with donations from thousands of other Cortland County residents and funds services that help hundreds of community residents, from all walks of life, throughout the year.
How does United Way ensure that my contribution is invested wisely? An allocations committee, comprising 18 community volunteers, tours each agency and meets with them one on one to ensure programs being funded are meeting the needs of the most people.
Why should I consider increasing my investment in United Way? No other charity is as comprehensive in meeting local needs than United Way for Cortland County. One gift benefits people in need through more than 65 programs offered by 15 local member agencies and funded by United Way contributions.
What if I prefer to contribute directly to an agency rather than giving through the United Way? Of course each agency is important, but it's impossible for a single agency to meet all the health and human service needs in our county. Conducting one annual appeal on behalf of all those organizations also reduces fundraising costs, ensuring more dollars go to provide services.
I never use agency services, so why should I give? More than likely a family member, friend, or co-worker is currently using a United Way funded service. Your gift helps strengthen your community by making important services available when needed. Please help us ensure that United Way services are there when they're needed.
Are donated dollars used for special events, banquets, etc? Absolutely not! Individuals who attend the events United Way conducts to recognize and thank volunteers, or update the community on campaign progress, have either paid for their ticket individually or are company sponsored.
