Day of Caring

September 19, 12th annual Day of Caring

The day officially kicks off United Way’s 69th fundraising campaign in Cortland County.

Area businesses and institutes will be carrying out various community service projects for nonprofit agencies and community organizations in Cortland County. It is a way for community members to give back to the people who donate so much time and effort to improving Cortland County. The projects are meant to make life easier and perhaps a little more pleasant for the staff and their clients.

List of projects that will be taking place on the Day of Caring:

  • Franziska Racker Center - read stories and work on art projects with preschool children.
  • Cortland County SPCA – washing the building, weeding, overall improvements outside
  • YMCA – painting lobby, outside cleanup, fixing up Head Start steps
  • Cortland Loaves & Fishes - sweeping sidewalks, improving the look of things out front
  • Walden Place - decorating foyer for fall season
  • The 1890 House Museum - re-potting plants in fernery
  • YWCA - fixing the parking lot, painting projects, cleaning the kitchen
  • YWCA /Child Day Care – painting auditorium and bathrooms
  • Cortland Area Child Care Council – washing windows, general maintenance
  • Here We Grow Child Care/ YWCA - fixing up playground, building a vegetable garden
  • Learning Adventure Child Care Center - fixing picnic tables, trimming trees
  • Madison-Cortland NYSARC – fixing up picnic tables, weeding flower beds
  • Cortland Child Development – washing windows, fixing up the playground
  • Salvation Army – painting projects
  • City of Cortland – cleaning up Courthouse Park
  • Northwoods – building birdhouses with residents
  • Catholic Charities – fixing up Charles Street deck and gazebo, fixing up Lawrence House
  • Cortland Regional Medical Center – sanding, painting, landscaping main entrances
  • American Red Cross of Cortland County – organizing the basement
  • Baden Powell Council - Boy Scouts of America – projects at Camp Barton
  • United Way for Cortland Co. – delivering posters for 2008 Campaign
  • Lime Hollow Nature Center – widening the park, cleaning up litter and debris
  • Homer Jr. High School – landscaping projects
