Services of United Way Agencies in Cortland American Red Cross hosts approximately 60 blood drives annually. Forty-four were held in the City of Cortland alone in the year 2000. The direct result of hosting bloodmobiles ensures that patients who need blood will receive blood or blood products in hospitals throughout New York State and Western Pennsylvania, excluding New York City. Cortland Memorial Hospital transfused over 1,000 units of blood into patients here in the City of Cortland. Disaster trained Red Cross volunteers have responded to fire, wind, or flooding disasters throughout the year. They have provided shelter, meals, personal comfort kits, clothing, prescriptions as needed, household furnishings, and other aid as needed on a case by case basis. Eighteen AFES (Armed Forces Emergency Services) volunteers have covered evenings, weekends and holidays to ensure that emergency verification for military personnel and their families is provided when it is needed. Health and Safety provides free blood pressure screening four times a month at two downtown locations - Alliance Bank on the second and fourth Fridays, and Cortland Savings Bank on the first and third Fridays. CPR and First Aid classes are offered almost daily every month, please telephone the office or check out www.redcross.org/ny/cortland and you can sign up online! Don't forget the annual "Learn to Swim" Program held at Suggett Park, Wickwire Pool in conjunction with the City of Cortland's Youth Bureau, from July 9 - 27. Registration takes place at the pool on June 20 between 4-6 p.m. or June 27 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Community service program offers emergency energy assistance to individuals or families who have received shut-off notices or are without fuel oil/propane gas or need repair of heating equipment. These three programs administered by the American Red Cross are last resort programs and are available only after all other community resources have been exhausted. Madison Cortland ARC - United Way helps to fund recreation programs for the developmentally disabled. Council Catholic Charities - offers teen services to pregnant, parenting or at-risk teens- tutoring and mentoring assistance, Young Men's Club for young men between 12-21 who want to reconnect with school, employment and family, an Emergency Assistance Program which includes emergency transportation, emergency prescription medication, work related materials and clothing and the Community Food Pantry. Community Food Pantry is open every weekday offering nutritional three-day meal packages to many underemployed families who need regular supplementation to their monthly grocery purchases. The Christmas Basket program targets needy families in all areas by delivering a complete Christmas meal and enough food for the holiday week. Cortland Area Child Care Council - the place to call if you are thinking of becoming a day care provider, are a day care provider, or need to find safe, recommended day care Cortland County Child Development Program- a safe dependable environment for children from infancy to five years for working families throughout the Cortland area. United Way donations fund scholarships for day care families. Recreational care before/after school and during the summer months for school-aged youngsters. Family Counseling Services- confidential affordable counseling on a sliding fee scale by trained professionals to families and individuals in crisis Franziska Racker Centers (formerly Special Children's Center) - Medical rehabilitation, therapy and evaluations, preschool and itinerant special education. Lime Hollow Nature Center - guided trails for hikes, interpretive talks and programs, day camps for youth, on site and in school environmental education Mental Health Association (REACH) - Family support program, REACH - Basics, lecture series, consumer affairs, Mental Health Digest, Children's Issues Newsletter, and Mental Health Monthly. Mental health consultation and referrals. Salvation Army - Comprehensive emergency assistance, community meal program, seasonal assistance, more than 10 youth and developmental programs YMCA - Swim & gymnastic programs, pre-school plus, after school program, vacation camps, youth & government, family focus programs YWCA - Fitness and recreation programs for children and adults, preschool childcare, Before/After School care, Universal Pre-K, Summer Camps, Drop-In Childcare, Aid to Victims of Violence, Bridges for Kids, Breast and Ovarian Cancer Awareness.
