Services of United Way Agencies in Homer American Red Cross volunteers respond to fires, floods, wind storms, blizzards, and other disasters providing shelter, meals, clothing, shoes, needed prescriptions, personal items, clean up kits, groceries, household items, and other needs on a case by case basis. AFES (Armed Forces Emergency Services) provides emergency verification/communication for military personnel and their families in the event of family illnesses, deaths, births, and other crisis. Blood services provides blood drives for blood to be donated thus assisting the Regional Blood Center in the collection of over 1,000 units of blood needed daily for hospitals' patients throughout New York State and Western Pennsylvania excluding only New York City. Approximately 60 bloodmobiles are being held annually throughout Cortland County to help meet the need of patients. Health and Safety offers free Blood Pressure Screening in the City of Cortland four times a month and in Cincinnatus monthly. Health and Safety provides free demonstrations and mini-first aid courses for organizations and groups. CPR and First Aid are offered weekly and you may sign up online at www.redcross.org/ny/cortland. Many new changes are in progress to offer AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), Back Injury Prevention, Slips, Trips and Falls, Ergonomics, Stress Management, and Your Heart Matters. American Red Cross' Water Safety courses are offered at the YWCA. A "Learn to Swim" program is offered annually in conjunction with the City of Cortland's Youth Bureau at Suggett Park, Wickwire Pool. Community Services offers emergency utility assistance to individuals or families in a shut-off status or without fuel oil/propane gas or in need of repair for heating equipment. Three different energy emergency programs are administered by the American Red Cross and have different guidelines. All three programs are last resort and are only available after all other assistance has been exhausted. Madison Cortland ARC is available to school districts, county agencies, professionals and local families to provide needed services to people with developmental disabilities Boy Scouts - Baden-Powell Council Catholic Charities distributes school supplies in August, they offer Teen Services to pregnant, parenting or at-risk teens, Young Men's Club for young men between 12-21, an Emergency Assistance Program which includes emergency transportation, emergency prescription medication, work related materials and clothing, and The Christmas Basket - a complete Christmas meal. Call the Central New York Girl Scout Council at (315) 437-6531 to find the nearest troop for your daughter. Cortland Area Childcare Council trains and assists family day care providers Families working in Cortland use the Cortland Child Development Center Franziska Racker Centers (formerly Special Children's Center) offers evaluation, therapy, preschool education, and family support to families. Lime Hollow Nature Center offers presentations to schools and groups Mental Health Association offers a Mental Health Digest to Phillips Free Library, offers family support services, REACH-Basics lecture series, consultation and referral. YWCA offers before and after school programs at Homer Elementary School and Homer Intermediate school. YWCA's Bridges for Kids and Aid to Victims of Violence are available. Swim lessons July 2 - August 25 at the YWCA through the Homer Recreation program.
